Process Safety Management Refresher courses are designed for companies who want to refresh and substantiate their knowledge and understanding of Process Safety Management issues. They are flexible courses based on the industry standards, which are designed so you can choose the areas of process safety that are important to you and your organisation.
HSE is keen to support the development and delivery of training and coaching for board members and managers in process safety. It is essential that the momentum on improving competence in process safety management is maintained throughout the sector in order to ensure those involved in managing major hazard risks gain and maintain the knowledge and skills essential to avoid a major accident. We have come a long way since the disastrous events of Buncefield but it would be wrong to think that the task of improving competence has been completed.

About the Course
This course enables you to revisit key learning and principles of Process Safety Management helping you to maintain the right level of understanding of the subject within your organisation. It also allows you to review progress made on action plans as well as set Process Safety Management objectives going forward. It is designed for companies who want to refresh and reinvigorate their knowledge and understanding of Process Safety Management issues.
As with all of Cogent’s Process Safety courses, this course will be delivered by an industry experienced delivery partner who is assured to deliver to the recognised standards. Delegates will be challenged to extend their learning and ensure they are able to promote a positive process safety culture.

How is it delivered?
The course will be delivered on site and has been specifically designed with a flexible approach to allow the organisation to choose the elements which are most important to them.
The course also includes a review of how far the delegate and the organisation have progressed in their process safety journey and you will be supported to ensure continuing progress.
Delegates will also have the option of being able to access online assessments for Process Safety Management Foundations and Process Safety Management for Operations (different options are available).
The course is delivered by highly experienced Cogent Skills assured training providers, using case studies and group discussions to actively engage all participants. All delegates will be given exclusive access to a suite of video case studies designed to reinforce the learning for up to three years.
What will I learn?
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the importance of effective process safety management
- Understand the nature of major accidents, identify how hazards and risks are defined and associated with hazardous substances and process plants
- Understanding the key elements of process safety management systems, critical equipment, sustaining their effectiveness and keeping the process safe
- Understand the importance of effective risk management to limit the consequences of major and process incidents
- Understand how to apply learning from incidents and near misses
- Understand how to promote a positive process safety culture and the importance of good process safety principles
- Understand the concept and how to monitor performance to achieve continuous improvement in process safety performance
